After crossing the Otamayahashi Bridge over the Hirosegawa River, you’ll find the mausoleum that the feudal lord of Sendai, DATE Masamune, directed in his will to be constructed, Zuihoden. Since the original was regrettably burned down in the war in 1945, the present building was constructed in 1979, but the beauty of its elegant and gorgeous ornamentation conveying the Momoyama cultural traditions is overwhelming. The grounds, surrounded by old cedars, also contain the richly colorful and splendid mausoleums of Kansenden, built for the second DATE ruler, Tadamune, and Zennoden, for the third DATE ruler, Tsunamune. The museum is in a reconstructed accompanying building, where you can view and read about burial accessories and likenesses of the lords, and watch a documentary movie about the archeological survey. As its appearance changes with the seasons, through cherry blossoms, green leaves, autumn colors and snow, Zuihoden’s abundant nature makes it the perfect spot for taking a stroll. On Saturdays and Sundays there are also free guided tours.
