Bustling with Events Year-Round
Jozenji-dori Ave
Jozenji-dori Avenue is a symbol of the City of Trees, with zelkova trees lining its 700 meter length that crosses east to west through the center of Sendai. There are benches along the promenade, which serves as a small outdoor museum thanks to the sculptures by Emilio Greco and others installed there. The swaying branches full of young foliage form a tunnel where the citizens of Sendai can relax and refresh themselves in the sunlight that filters through the leaves. All year round a variety of events are hosted here, such as in autumn when music enthusiasts gather for the Jozenji Streetjazz Festival, and in winter when the trees are illuminated for the Pageant of Starlight. Shopping streets full of large stores and a park with an outdoor music venue nearby make this a rich area that’s perfect for shopping or taking a stroll.
