The Statue of DATE Masamune
on Horseback Watches Over
the City of Sendai
Site of Sendai Castle
Sendai Castle, built on the natural fortress of Mount Aoba, from which it gets its nickname, Aoba Castle, was constructed over 400 years ago by the feudal founder, DATE Masamune. Though no structure remains, the stone walls that have stood through the ages and the reconstructed watchtower help us imagine what it was like in its heyday. At present, it is a park that gives you a view from the center of Sendai all the way to the Pacific Ocean. The statue of DATE Masamune on horseback that stands on the castle tower base is an iconic symbol of the Sendai landscape. There is plenty of history on view at the Aoba Castle Museum, known for its scale model of the castle and computer graphics reproduction of the castle on a 300 inch screen, and at the Sendai-jo Kenbunkan , which contains research on the castle’s history and the archeological survey. Souvenir shops with Sendai goods which can only be bought here, and the restaurant where you can taste local dishes are also a must.
